Critical Discussion and Decisions:

The discussion centered on "what kind of learning experiences we want for kids.  Students need the experience of having experts teach them in certain subject areas at certain times.  This can include taking children to the workplace or other people coming to school.  Discussion of pecialist
teachers and how to define them provided a lively debate.

The conclusion was that there needs to be a way to safeguard a level of competence, keeping in mind the goal of student learning, not to antagonize each other.

Alignment with intent of legislation in the Katz Bill and it's successors - connecting school to the outside world. Because of site-based ecision-making, FTE base in buildings has moved away from art. Schools have elected to use FTE to reduce class size, provide P.E., and arts instruction has not been seen as essential to the elementary program.

One idea that came up many times was the possibility of diversifying building use and keep schools in the neighborhoods by adding senior
services, lease to preschools, etc.

Many group members were curious about what has been learned at the Alternative school at Churchill, wouldn't it be nice to have options for
all students, without prerequisite trouble with the law or dropping out. Many members were interested in the possibility of reviewing SFC final
report referral back to Ed Programs Committee.

Public Meeting:

After discussion regarding options for the presentation, the group agreed on the following plan:
  1. Present overview (Carolyn Schmidt and Pamela Miller) of what we have so far, with 2-3 task force members at each table.
  2. Invite guests to state hopes and fears; Informal reporting at the end of the meeting.
  3. Parents, business people, and people representing agencies can receive a personal invitation from members.
  4. Information about task force put in paper and radio.
