Section II: Recommendations For Comprehensive Building And Campus Utilization

Preamble

Schools, as significant community capital investments, will be fully utilized. Schools will be flexible in time, space and resources, in order to accommodate sustained multiple use. Schools will be accessible throughout the campus for staff, students, parents, and the full community, including those with disabilities.[Relates to Guiding Principles #1, #2, #6 and #7]

Instructional Activities

  • Facilities will be adequate to deliver full programs. [Relates to Guiding Principle #3]


  • Spaces will be suitably designed for instruction and programs (child- and adolescent-oriented, art, music, physical education, media, environmental, etc.). [Relates to Guiding Principle #3]


  • Appropriate conference and gathering spaces will be provided at all schools for both large and small groups. [Relates to Guiding Principles #2 and #3]


  • Schools will provide adequate work space for students, staff and community volunteers. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Spaces will be provided to allow for and encourage business involvement. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Designs will anticipate fast-paced technology development and the importance of preparing students for a technology-oriented world. [Relates to Guiding Principle #2]


Student Extracurricular Activities (outside "normal" instructional day)

  • Designs will encourage before-school and after-school activities for both students and community. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Schools will be designed for efficient after-school use with appropriate security and access to rest rooms and parking lots. Lighting, heating and ventilation will be appropriately zoned to provide comfort and economy of operation. [Relates to Guiding Principle #4]


  • Adequate space will be provided for safe and efficient access and circulation for automobiles, bicycles, and buses. [Relates to Guiding Principles #4, #5 and #6]


  • Access from parking and drop-off areas will be safe and well lit. [Relates to Guiding Principle #4]


Community Use

  • Schools will play an important role in establishing and maintaining a sense of "community". [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Schools will accommodate and encourage use by seniors, both during and after school. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Schools will be available for use by community groups for a variety of non-school activities. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Facilities for before- and after-school child care will be incorporated. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Consideration will be given to incorporating the services of other community agencies into the facility. These could include Lane Community College programs, city police stations and public libraries. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


  • Appropriate fees and schedules will be determined in collaboration with the users. [Relates to Guiding Principle #6]


Athletic Fields & Playgrounds

  • Playgrounds will be innovative and designed to encourage positive activity by all children. [Relates to Guiding Principles #1, #2 and #3]


  • Weather protection will be provided for some portions of playgrounds. [Relates to Guiding Principle #5]


  • Adequate space will be provided for a variety of outdoor athletic activities. [Relates to Guiding Principle #3]


  • Design of athletic fields and playgrounds will consider safety, security, supervision and ease of use. [Relates to Guiding Principles #3 and #4]


  • Playgrounds and athletic fields will be designed with adequate drainage and irrigation to allow for extended season use. [Relates to Guiding Principles #3 and #4]
