Public Comment

Speaking as a representative of the YES for Schools Committee, Beth Gerot appealed to those present to help with canvassing to encourage people to vote and return their ballots.  She indicated that with the double majority required in the May election, a non-vote is worse than a “No” vote.  She gave times and places where canvassing groups would meet, and circulated sign-up sheets for volunteers.

Review of Process

Margot Helphand explained the whole group/small group process that had gone into producing the draft document. She said that the goal of this meeting would be to spend about 15 minutes discussing each of the eight sections of the report.  (The categories are: Structures that Support Teaching and Learning, Program Stability, School Choice, Community Involvement and Engagement, District and Community Resources, Equity, Diversity, and Accountability.)  She directed members to focus on important issues, but contact Evie Matthews later about small changes in wording.  Here, members were to mention major additions, deletions, or changes, and to verify what was right on target. Evie asked members to leave their written comments with her to be used, in conjunction with a transcript of the spoken comments, by the writing group to prepare a revised draft.

Work Session

.The group discussed each of the categories, with Margot checking for general consensus about the essence and format of each section before moving on to the next. For the report as a whole, the general feeling was that there was repetition and redundancy that could be eliminated; that the job was to clean up and focus the report, and to make it pro-active and positive, not problem-focused.  When asked by a member whether the final report to the School Board would have a place for minority reports or dissensions, Virginia said, “Absolutely! Strongly held minority opinions will be included.”

Next Steps

Virginia reviewed what would happen next. Evie will first rewrite the document, which will then be reviewed and refined by a sub-committee Monday, May 1. The resulting draft will be emailed to the full committee on Wednesday, May 3 to allow time to submit comments to Evie before the next meeting.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the Committee will be Tuesday, May 9 from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. in the Education Center Tower Room, 200 N. Monroe.
