7:38 Tsuki Oda-Riddell  -  TSPC - Future needs of teacher supply and demand (statewide)
  • 45,000 new hires per year - nationwide
  • Oregon graduates 1,500 out of state SPED, MATH, Counselor, psyc.
  • 6,600 retirements a year
  • NW shortage - ESL
  • Incentive programs in colleges to major in areas of needs are part of other states' plans - Oregon does not.
  • Special programs for classified and others in the classroom to go to school and become a teacher.
  • Mentor programs- chances of staying increases
  • Underrepresented - minorities 3.9 teachers to 5.9 this year. New teachers 14.9.  44 percent of schools have no minority. (see "Challenges Before Us" report handout by TSPC)

Betsy Clewett - Northwest Christian College

  • 1995 - started training teachers - curriculum designed around consortuim of area schools (Bette) need standard based curriculum. Intergrated education (e.d. 2000)
  • 4 year model results in degree and certification. 1 full year of internship - Aug. to June ESL endorsment plus the mentor center program to attract  and keep minorities is starting this summer.
  • Completing requirement in 2 year schools guanrantees acceptance to NCC
  • Financial aid in place for full program
  • Cultural Connectedness
  • Faculty Respect and honoring of diversity, inservice and training.
