Public Comment

The task force welcomed three individuals who attended the public hearing.  They were: Majeska Seese-Green, Elna Robinette, and Bill Toll.

Review of Latest Draft of the Task Force Report

Task force members reviewed the recommendations one at a time and received input from community members present.  Several points were made.  They included:
  • Under the recommendations for a volunteer coordinator it was suggested that the word "salaried" be added to the sentence that references a volunteer coordinator at the district level.  The notion that each school continues to need a volunteer coordinator of its own to coordinate the effort at each school needs to be clear.  This salaried employee will work directly with each school's coordinator to enhance the volunteer programs in each school.
  • Task force members are very interested in what will happen to the report when it is received by the Schools of the Future Committee. Bette Shoemaker stated that she would share the interest of the task force in sitting down with the Schools of the Future Committee to review our recommendations and to respond to questions.  She will share this with Evie Matthews.
  • Under the recommendations around program staffing, the task force agreed to remove the reference to the board taking action to close and consolidate schools.  Including that statement may have led the Schools of the Future Committee to believe that as a result of the study, schools would have to be consolidated or closed.  The task force is hoping that the study committee will determine the appropriate responses to the study.  We are not in a position at this time to make any recommendations about consolidating or closing schools.
  • The task force agreed to include only those email exchanges about key recommendations in Appendix D of the report.  Some exchanges were about meeting dates and times, etc. and the task force felt no need to include these in the appendix.

Next Meeting

The March 7th meeting was cancelled.  The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
