School Choice Task Group: Recommendations to the Schools of the Future Committee

Introduction

The members of the task group on School Choice unanimously agree that a program that offers students and parents a variety of choices of educational philosophies, as well as specific course offerings, will better meet the needs of the greatest number of students. Since students’ educational needs and goals are widely varied, offering a variety of choices to students will reinforce the belief that the educational system is here to serve them and that education is a life-long process.

Early on in the process, the task group identified the criteria that it believes should be used by the School Board to evaluate the district’s school choice program in the future to ensure program stability, equity, fairness, and program quality. See Recommen-dation #1, Criteria for Evaluating the School District’s Program of Choice.

Task Group Process: The Schools of the Future Committee appointed the School Choice Task Group to study school choice in District 4J and to make recommendations about the future of the program. The committee, which was composed of 17 community and 4 staff members, met regularly between October and March to develop the recommen-dations that follow.

The task group received a number of presentations on school choice in the school district, invited stakeholders to attend an information sharing session in early January, and held a public input session on February 29 to review its tentative recommendations.

Task Group Recommendations: As it developed its recommendations, the task group concluded that the district needs to focus on equity between programs, program identity, and program quality. The task group’s recommendations, which are the heart of this document, begin on page 7.
