Equity Issue with School ChoiceRecommendation 2: District resources are distributed equitably to schools. Recommendation 3: All schools have an equal ability to set class size and enrollment targets. Recommendation 4: All schools are balanced and reflect the diversity of the school district. Recommendation 5: The system for awarding places in schools is equitable and is perceived as being equitable. Recommendation 6: Regions are redefined along demographic boundaries. Each region has a mix of types of schools. Transportation is available to any school within a student’s region and students are guaranteed access to some school within the region.
C. Program Identity and School ChoiceRecommendation 7: A diversity of programs exists within the school district. Within this range of diversity, some programs are geographically based and have a mission to serve a particular neighborhood, although, they can accept students from elsewhere in the district. Others are chartered on a particular program, and accept students who enroll from anywhere in the district. Recommendation 8: Both program diversity (providing each student a broad range of offerings) and intimacy of setting is available to all students. Recommendation 9: There is a great deal of integration between programs sharing the same building. Recommendation 10: Any publicly-funded school is held accountable to its own mission as contracted or chartered. Recommendation 11: The school district provides comprehensive information for students and parents about all schools and programs that are publicly funded. A Consideration: Neighborhood elementary schools form the core of the district’s education program. D. Program QualityRecommendation 12: Innovation is aggressively promoted and encouraged both within district-operated schools and district-supported independently operated schools. Recommendation 13: Magnet and independent programs "push the edges" of innovation and ensure that the needs of all students are being met. Recommendation 14: The district periodically reevaluates the purpose and relevance of publicly-funded schools. Recommendation 15: The district takes measures to preserve quality in schools with declining enrollment. | |
