—Auto Insurance Coverage

The District provides auto coverage for all employees, approved volunteers and agents (all referred to as "the driver.") over 21 years of age while driving:

  • Personal vehicles on district business. Coverage is only for liability above the individual's personal coverage.

In District-owned vehicles, coverages include:

  • Liability for property damage or bodily injury to a third party, as a result of an accident caused by the negligence of the driver.

In personal vehicles, coverages include:

  • Liability for property damage or bodily injury to a third party, as a result of an accident caused by the negligence of the driver. Coverage is only for damages above the limits of the driver's personal policy.
  • Coverage above the limits of the driver's personal policy if the driver is involved in an accident with an uninsured vehicle.

To qualify for the District's auto liability insurance, the individual employee or volunteer must:

  • Be over 21 years of age.
  • Be approved by the school principal.
  • Carry state-mandated personal auto insurance with at least $25,000/$50,000 public liability coverage and $10,000 property damage coverage.
  • Use a booster seat for all children who are under the age of six or who weigh less than 60 pounds.
  • Fill out the 4J Staff & Volunteers Private-Auto Insurance Form(pdf).

Coverage is automatic for any approved drivers on District business if they meet all conditions above.

If students are being transported in personal vehicles, additional driver requirements must be met. Review information on Transporting Students In Personal Vehicles before planning any field trips on which students will be transported in private vehicles.
