4J website changing

4J's website, www.4j.lane.edu, is in the process of changing to a new, better format and appearance.

The new site should be completely functional by Monday, Jan. 8 at 8 a.m. Before then, users may experience some strangeness, and staff should not attempt to change content on www.4j.lane.edu before Monday morning. Staff will be notified by e-mail of next steps when the change is complete.

School Choice season begins

January is looming, and so to is the annual School Choice “season” in the Eugene School District.

The district’s popular school choice policy entices hundreds of families every year to sample different schools in 4J. Between Jan. 3, 2007 and March 2, 2007, parents can submit school choice applications for where they’d like to send their children for the 2007-08 school year.

District schools will hold open houses and other events to welcome prospective parents during the weeks of Jan. 22-26 and Feb. 12-16. The district will also hold informational meetings on school choice at the 4J Education Center, 200 North Monroe Street, at the following times: Thursday, Jan. 18, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, 9 a.m.-10 a.m., and Saturday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.-10 a.m.

4J’s school choice policy allows parents to send their children to any school within the district, provided that there is space available. Parents are welcome in all schools, and are especially encouraged to visit their neighborhood school.

To enter the school choice process, parents should obtain and fill out a School Choice Form starting Jan. 3, and return it no later than March 2 to the Instruction Department at the 4J Education Center, 200 North Monroe Street.

Alternative School Reviews released

On Dec. 13, the district released the next round of Alternative School Reviews (PDF, 1.8MB), which includes the three language-immersion elementary schools and Corridor Elementary.

The report is a recommendation to the superintendent, who will later make recommendations to the board. The new reviews follow last year’s batch, which covered four other alternative elementary schools. Go here for more information on Alternative School Review and the “Access & Options” process that called for the reviews.

Wonder about weather?

The district will NOT make an announcement if school is IN SESSION. The district will either announce that buses are on snow routes, or that school will be canceled.

Parents have several ways to hear about weather-related school closures in the Eugene School District.

District-run radio station KRVM-FM 91.9 will run school closure information regularly. Other local radio and TV stations will also air closure information, although the district cannot guarantee the accuracy of the message reported on those stations. For closure information on-line, go to www.valleyinfo.net.

Whenever possible, weather-related notices will also be posted on the front of the 4J web site, www.4j.lane.edu.

Students who ride school buses that sometimes use snow routes have been informed of what to do when snow routes are in effect. For more information about snow routes, contact the 4J Transportation Department at 687-3435.
