The Information Literacy Process

  1. Defining the Task
  2. Locating Information
  3. Selecting & Analyzing Information
  4. Organizing & Synthesizing Information
  5. Creating & Presenting Information
  6. Evaluating the Process

This guide is designed to address the varying information literacy needs of District 4J students and staff. The terms information literacy and research are used interchangeably in this guide. Research is the whole process while information literacy refers to understanding each part.

To begin your research, start with Defining the Task.

For many students, the research process is simple, beginning with defining the task and ending with evaluating the process. For others, the process is not that easy. In reality, researching is not a straight-forward step-by-step process. The figure below shows how the process actually works. The learning involved in research occurs when the student goes back to refine a step as reflected with the lines and arrows.
