Locating Information: Electronic Searching: Databases

  1. Dewey Decimal System
  2. Using the Online Catalog
  3. Reference Tools
  4. Electronic Searching

Libraries cannot afford to subscribe to all of the magazines their clientele need. Instead libraries provide access to databases which index articles from magazines that can be searched electronically.

In databases, magazines, journals and newspapers are called periodicals because they are publications printed in intervals (weekly, monthly, etc.) for an indefinite period of time. Go to journals vs. magazines for more information about these periodicals.

There are many types of databases. The example shown here is the MAS Ultra-School Edition database provided by EBSCO.

The following steps are involved in locating information in reference books, magazines, journals, newspapers and web links for your topic in EBSCO databases.

Step 1: The first screen that opens when you go to EBSCOhost is the one on the left. The next screen is the one shown on the right.

At this screen you will need to choose databases

Step 2: This is the EBSCO search screen. Note that it defaults to keyword search. Type your search term(s) into the search box and click on search.

Step 3: Look at the results of your search.

Step 4: Select an article to read.

If your native language is Spanish you can have the article translated.

Step 5: E-mail or print an article that you want to use.
