MAKE A "STRUCTURE" FOR TAKING NOTES (diagram)

GET READY TO USE TWO PROGRAMS AT ONCE --
INSPIRATION AND NETSCAPE OR EXPLORER (diagram)

 Inspiration is a helpful organizational tool. Many schools in the Eugene School District have site licenses to this program. Detailed instructions are provided here for using the program effectively.

 

Step 1
Decide which "view" to use (diagram).

Step 2
Make a "structure" for taking notes (diagram).

 

 

1.
 Open Inspiration.
2.
You should see this:
The words "Main Idea" are selected, so whatever you type will replace them.

Type a good title for your notes.

Choose or the 10-key Enter to activate RapidFire (see a lightning bolt):

 Type the first heading and push the right-pinky Enter (return on a Mac) key.
6. In a second or two, you'll see the words "pop out" like this:

Don't click the mouse or anything... just type:
• name of heading 2, push Enter
• name of heading 3", push Enter
• additional headings as needed, push Enter
• "Sources", push Enter

Note: if you type quickly, the words will "pile up" before popping out...

After everything is out...

Click on the symbols...

and drag them over...

and release the mouse...

To make a diagram structure like this...

 Be sure to SAVE your structure (on a disk) properly so that you can use it!

Step 3
Get ready to use two programs at once: Inspiration and Netscape/Explorer (diagram)

 

 

Follow these steps to learn how to "split the screen" so that you can see and use two programs at once. You will be reading information on the WWW, and taking notes on your Inspiration outline.

1.
 Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer. Do this by going to the Start menu in the lower left, dragging up to Programs, and chosing Internet Explorer.

 In the upper right hand corner, find the "minimize" button (it looks like a small minus sign or dash). Click on it to minimize the browser window.

 Notice that there is a "task bar" along the bottom of the screen which shows an image with the browser logo. Click on this to bring up the browser window. Click "minimize" to shrink it back down.

When Inspiration is open, it can be manipulated the same way:
• click on task bar icon to bring it up on the screen
• click on "minimize" to put it back down

Use these moves to see/read information on the WWW, then switch over to Inspiration to make notes.
