| The alternative program at Churchill
offers extensive opportunities for independent study and non-traditional
methods for completing high school graduation requirements. The program
is aimed primarily at students who have dropped out or who are at risk
of dropping out, or students who for various reasons have not experienced
success in a traditional classroom setting. Instruction is largely individualized
and students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning
and discipline. The alternative school provides a rigorous academic program
coupled with experiences that promote emotional and social growth. A strong
school-to-work transition program allows students to explore career opportunities
while they earn credit toward a high school diploma. Teachers in the program
assume the extended roles of counselor, mentor, confidant and friend. Teachers
and students work together to create a school setting where each feels
a sense of belonging and ownership. A low student-to-teacher ratio (about
12: 1) allows for a family atmosphere where an individual's learning styles
and unique needs in and out of the classroom can be considered. Contact
