Purpose

The purpose of this strategic and systemic visioning process is to develop a vision for moving the Eugene School District from its current state to one that is better equipped to meet the needs of students and community in the 21st century. We must be able to provide students with a foundation that includes not only basic academic skills, but thinking, interpersonal, and communication competencies as well. They will need to understand social, organizational, and technological systems and know how to allocate time, money, materials and space in a collaborative manner. These skills and qualities will make it possible for students to succeed in a work environment that many futurists predict will be dynamic, fluid, and global.

By taking a systemic approach, we will be able to develop a vision for the future of our schools and articulate the specific strategies and outcomes necessary to accomplish that vision. Systemic planning will allow the district and the community together to shape our educational future and identify our educational priorities. The process will help us better anticipate long-term opportunities and assist us in developing long-range plans to respond to those opportunities. It will provide us with a set of coherent criteria for making decisions about the kind of system that we will need to educate our students in the 21st century.
