Under the umbrella of the Schools of the Future Committee, six focus area task groups will be formed to research specific areas, gather information from a variety of sources, and develop a report with strategic priorities and outcomes for consideration by the Schools of the Future Committee. Each task group would be chaired or co-chaired by a member of the Schools of the Future Committee. The task groups would hold hearings and use focus group meetings as part of their information gathering process. The composition of the task groups will generally be based on the focus area, but should reflect as much stakeholder involvement as possible, including parents, students, administrators, teachers, social service providers, and others. Staff will work with the schools and community to identify members and ensure a diverse representation of stakeholders on each of the task groups.
The general focus areas, and some possible discussion topics that would be considered, include:

Standards-based education Comprehensive curriculum--music, art, PE and health education, counseling, media, etc. Special education, students at risk, alternative learning options Class size, school size, school year, grade configurations Auxiliary services, e.g., health clinics Extracurricular activities Best instructional practices School Choice
Alternative schools and neighborhood schools Charter schools Class and race Large school/small school Educational Technology
Distance learning Instructional media Student information and records Administrative applications Ethical and legal issues Purchase and replacement of hardware and software Infrastructure School Facilities
Physical structure, design and purpose Accommodation of educational programs, extracurricular activities, and community use School replacement, renovation, consolidation, or closure Long-range facilities plan School safety and security School-Community Linkages
Lighted schools Partnerships and Shared Uses Business-education partnerships Mentoring and tutoring programs Resources
