Beginning
1st Semester 2005-06, all juniors at North Eugene High School are
taking Advanced Placement English classes. In addition to providing
high expectations and opportunities for all students, there is also
a support program to assure success for all students. For each AP
English class, an AP Support course has been created.
Students
may be enrolled in the AP Support course in one of two ways:
- When a student's
grade drops below a C, s/he will be required to enroll in and attend
AP Support until the end of the current quarter. If at that time
the student's grade has risen to a C or above, s/he will be excused
from AP Support the next quarter, unless his or her grade again
falls below a C.
- Students may
voluntarily enroll in AP Support.
In addition, any
student may drop-in to AP Support at any time to have a quiet place
to study or get help from the AP Support teacher (especially valuable
if a student has been absent from AP class).
AP Support meets
the first 45 minutes of the period, Monday through Thursday, on the
days the student doesn't meett with his or her AP class. Students
who enroll in AP Support for an entire quarter and hwo meet course
requirements will earn 1/8 English credit. Thus a student enrolled
in AP Support for the entire year will earn 1/2 English credit.
Below is a glimpse
of how the AP Support course works:

Shadiin
Garcia, one of the AP Support course teachers, starts the
class by handing out the Exit Slips, a reminder of class expectations.
|

In
addition to holding students accountable for their class behavior,
the slip also shows the regular AP teacher that the student
is participating.
|

Shadiin
explains theAP Support point system fo a student who was absent
from his regular class, and asks him if he's ready to take
the quiz that he missed.

The
AP Support course point sheet.
|

After
checking the point sheet to see what is missing, Shadiin helps
a student select what task she needs to do next to keep up
with her class.

involving memorization, costume and acting.

and print it out!
|

Students
in the AP Support course are put into teams for the project.
|

First
they work on reading and understanding their portion of the
play, The Tempest.
|

This
team begins to plot out the interaction of the characters
- who moves where when?
|

An
additional support for students is an audio tape so that they
can hear how one troupe gave verbal interpretation through
expression.
|

Now
this team has to decide how they will interpret their scene
for the class performance.
