On September 1, 2005, staff members of Eugene School District 4J met for the annual back to school gathering. This year was unique in that all speakers stressed the same focus - we must educate all students to successful achievement. Beth Gerot, Eugene School District 4J Chair, shared the values and goals of the Board in this light. Leaders from the teaching and support staffs as well as administrative staff pledged their efforts to this end. Superintendent George Russell re-affirmed his commitment. Then Dr. Robert Barr, retired Dean of the OSU College of Education, spoke compellingly of the effects of inadequate education upon our students and our nation, stating that education has now become the ultimate civil right for all.
