April
26, 2006, was a staff development day for Jefferson Middle School
teachers. They have been examining the research on achieving educational
success for all students, and looking at how it might apply to students
who attend Jefferson. Below are pictures showing some of their process:

Karen
Marashi, left, introduced a get-aquainted exercise from Tribes.
The task is designed to make people feel acknowledged and
included.
|

After
the person says his/her name and accompanies it with
a gesture, each person in the group repeats it.
|

Jeff
Johnson, next year's principal, cracks the group up with
his gesture - it's an exercise in good will and humor.
|

Next
Karen shares information she gleaned from Ruby Payne's
conference about the effects of poverty on student learning.
|

Tasha
Katsuda, Asst. Principal, shares a multi-cultural perspective
on the issue.
|

Staff
participated in an insightful discussion about how continued
poverty effects language level use and the ability to plan.
