Kennedy Middle School students were very motivated to respond in a positive and proactive manner to the recent allegations of racist behavior which occurred during several high school sporting events. Our students crafted a student pledge which supports tolerance and appreciation for the differences we all have. Below is the letter that will be sent to the principal of Roosevelt High School in Portland. This letter will accompany over 500 individually signed student pledges.

Debra Peterson, Principal
Roosevelt High School
6941 North Central Street
Portland, Oregon         97203
Dear Principal Peterson,

We, the entire student body of Kennedy Middle School, would like to present you, your staff and your student body our John F. Kennedy Middle School Pledge. This collection of individually signed pledges represent over 500 students and their strong commitment to make a difference, especially in regards to racist behavior. As the largest feeder school for Churchill High School our students wanted to make a strong and continued pledge not to tolerate racist behavior…anywhere and any time. Not only have our students pledged to appreciate our differences, they have committed to speak up when they may see or hear anyone engaged in racist behavior.

At Kennedy Middle School we value, appreciate and respect each of our differences. Please accept this gesture as a symbol of our commitment to end offensive behavior.

Thank you for your efforts to make our world a better place for everyone. Thank you for your recognition of our commitment.

Sincerely

Charles Smith, Principal and 500 Kennedy Middle School Students

John F. Kennedy Middle School Pledge

I realize that everyone is unique and I pledge to try to understand and appreciate how we are different instead of fear our differences.

I will not say or do anything to hurt someone because they are different from me.

I will speak up if I see or hear anyone else say or do racist, prejudiced or bigoted things.
