Churchill Region - staff development planning to extend effectiveness of presentations; awareness of impact of poverty on the culture of kids

Sheldon Region - building leadership capacity for decreasing the achievement gap

The Wallace Grant makes possible a variety of leadership trainings:

North Region - focus on the "struggling learner"

• planning for Mar. 29 regional inservice, 8 am to 2 pm
• keynote/break out sessions on closing the achievement gap
• April 9th, all administrators workshop on cultural competence

Instruction Department - Equity and Diversity Training for Cultural Competence

"Cultural competence is defined as an ongoing process by which individuals and systems respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, languages, classes, rasces, sexes, ethinic backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations, abilities and other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of individuals, families, and communities and portects and preserves the dignity of each."
- Mak, 2002

Lead Group - representative administrators from each region meet with the district director, University of Oregon consultants, and State of Oregon Department of Education consultants on a regular basis to coordinate Wallace grant efforts across all levels.

Kay Mehas, Eugene Wallace grant director, introduces Rob Larson, director of the Oregon State Action for Education Leadership Project, to the district leadership team. State goals are: 1. cultural competence, 2. adolescent literacy, and 3. high school reform, with articulation from the elementary classroom through the district, the ESD, and the state levels.

Phil McCullum (UO), Anselmo Villanueva (Adams/Hillside principal), Mary Catlin (UO researcher), and Laurie Moses (South Eugene High School principal) discuss utilization of the Educational Leadership Improvement Tool developed last year in a collaborative effort by the 4J School District and the UO.

Principals from North and Sheldon regions listen attentively to presentations regarding various leadership opportunities for their leadership teams for the spring and summer of 2004, which support the commitment to leadership development to improve student achievement.
