Throughout the school year, administrators have been meeting in regional
leadership teams to collaborate on how to move Wallace grant goals
forward. Here's a glimpse from meetings during the winter of 2004
of what's going on:

Wallace Grant makes possible a variety of leadership trainings:

- focus on the "struggling learner"
• planning
for Mar. 29 regional inservice, 8 am to 2 pm
• keynote/break out sessions on closing the achievement gap
• April 9th, all administrators workshop on cultural competence

Equity and Diversity Training for Cultural Competence

"Cultural
competence is defined as an ongoing process by which individuals
and systems respond respectfully and effectively to people
of all cultures, languages, classes, rasces, sexes, ethinic
backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations, abilities and
other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes, affirms,
and values the worth of individuals, families, and communities
and portects and preserves the dignity of each."

Lead Group -
representative administrators from each region meet with the district
director, University of Oregon consultants, and State of Oregon Department
of Education consultants on a regular basis to coordinate Wallace
grant efforts across all levels.

Kay
Mehas, Eugene Wallace grant director, introduces Rob Larson,
director of the Oregon State Action for Education Leadership
Project, to the district leadership team. State goals are:
1. cultural competence, 2. adolescent literacy, and 3. high
school reform, with articulation from the elementary classroom
through the district, the ESD, and the state levels.

Phil
McCullum (UO), Anselmo Villanueva (Adams/Hillside principal),
Mary Catlin (UO researcher), and Laurie Moses (South Eugene
High School principal) discuss utilization of the Educational
Leadership Improvement Tool developed last year in a collaborative
effort by the 4J School District and the UO.

Principals
from North and Sheldon regions listen attentively to presentations
regarding various leadership opportunities for their leadership
teams for the spring and summer of 2004, which support the
commitment to leadership development to improve student achievement.
