South Area Leadership Team Meeting Minutes
January 10, 2005 4:30 - 6:00
Parker/Eastside School Library
Next Meeting: February 14 at Spencer Butte Morley convenes
Convener: Laurie Recorder: Martha Host: Sharon
Present: Eric, Stephanie, Laurie, Patrick, Morley, Randy, Mike, Kay,
Sharon, Gig, Martha, Terry, Kay, Larry
Absent: Jeralynn, Tom, Cydney
Item - Presenter -Time
1. IHS proposal for funds Laurie/Martha/Morley 5
min
We are in agreement that the proposal does not meet the standards
of Wallace funds. It was proposed that HIS be included “at the
table” in regional meetings so that we can better understand
and support their needs that pertain to the achievement gap
2. Budget Mary Beth, Kay 5 min
At this time the records show that we have only spent $152.00 of our
$35,000 budget, however, we are aware that other funds have been spent.
3. Proposals:
A. Link Crew/Web Proposal Eric 10 min
Both middle and high schools have sent teams. The anecdotal reports
are that this has been very helpful. South has only lost 5 freshmen
this year compared with 22 by this time last year. Referral rates
are down 75% and the number of students below 2.0 gpa are down.
Roosevelt and Spencer Butte referral rates are also down.
Middle schools are asking to send 4 staff to a refresher course.
South would like to send 2 additional staff.
We do not yet have any data to support that Link Crew specifically
is helping to bridge the achievement gap, although it is a vital
part of the total plan to help students stay in school and be more
successful. The school culture is definitely improved.
Suggestion: At the training, ask if there is some way this type
of data might be gathered.
Encumbered $14, 600.00
B. Ruby Payne conf on Poverty Jeralynn 5 min
Larry will give us a blurb about the conference that we can send
to staff. He will also send us information on total costs to attend.
Each building can use that information to survey staffs for interest
and email Larry with a team of 3 or 4 teachers max.
Cost: $225. + sub costs + $89. + transportation + meals= approx.
$25,000.
NOTE: Charlie Smith from McCornack is a trainer and can do follow-up
work with staffs.
4. School choice procedures/timeline Randy 5 min
Kelly McIver has sent out a flyer being distributed to all elementary
schools that includes visitation information on all middle and high
schools. Middle schools may mail specific information to any 5th grader
living in their attendance area, attending their feeder school and
to local alternative schools, excluding Charlemagne which is a feeder
school to Roosevelt. MS alternative programs can send flyers to all
elementary schools which will be available upon request in offices.
Elementary school guidelines regard visitation only during the two
specified weeks.
5. Regional plan: disc/decision All 40 min
Regarding Cultural Competency: How do we frame cultural competency
in a practical, experiential way that will prevent staffs from getting
the glazed eyes, “we’ve done this before” attitude?
Laurie and Patrick will discuss this with Terry. Kay and Larry have
a book on developing leadership towards cultural competency that they
will get to Laurie and Patrick in preparation for their discussion.
Assignment: Look at the plan and determine what meetings we may dedicate
to which goals. There was some discussion on Eric Jensen summer training.
Martha will resend information.
6. March 28 [Inservice Day] Randy 5 min
Suggestions:
George presents South data (the incredibly shrinking, changing region).
Follow-up with break-out sessions relating to the data with facilitators,
perhaps using Critical Friends protocols. There is some interest in
sessions on differentiation and cultural competency.
Who to lead sessions? Who to organize? Larry will do some initial
thinking.
Penny Plavala on reading differentiation suggested by Morley.
7. Assessment tool -- TABLED Kay 15 min
