Goals - This fourth annual Wallace Foundation Grantee Meeting
on Education Leadership recognizes the work we have accomplished
together in strenthening
the performance of education leaders and creating the conditions for
their success to improve the quality of learning for all children.
We will discuss case studies of successful efforts, hear more
about research, and examine the implications of education leadership
in a climate of greater accountability. We will explore the knowledge,
policies and practices that will lead us to solutions to common problems
and, ultimately, enable this initiative to have greater impact for
the children we serve, and equally important, a significant impact
in districts and states beyond those represented at this conference.
Building on the
original objectives of LEADERS Count, new goals for advancing our
education leadership initiative are:
- Develop leaders
with the necessary skills and capacity to improve student learning.
- Enhance working
conditions and incentives to enable leaders to improve student
learning.
- Ensure that
policies, programs, practices and budgets are coordinated in
ways that connect leadership to meeting high expectations for
every child.
- Build and
support networks, partnerships, and other strategies to disseminate
and implement nationally, and sustain over time, the knowledge
and successful programs and policies developed by our investments
and actions.
Leadership is
a shared responsibility, and collaboration is our best hope for
achieveing our goal of providing every child an excellent education.
Participants -
education leaders and directors, researchers and college/university
professors, board members, superintendents, principals and assistant
principals
from 17 school districts and
31 states.

Questions for Reflection -
- How does leadership
matter?
- What do leaders
need to believe, know and be able to do in order to be effective
in improving student achievement, especially for students with
the greatest needs?
- What are the
conditions necessary for effective leadership to significantly
improve student achievement, especially for students with the
greatest needs?
- How can we
build the partnerships to improve the alignment of schools, districts
and the state to enhance the capacity of leaders and the conditions
and systems within which they work to improve student achievement?
- How can we
create the urgency to bring about the necessary changes faster
for the children that need it the most?
- What is my
leadership role in achieving the above?
