Podcasting for Struggling Readers

Using a small Title II grant we have developed a program of recorded reading lessons for Kindergarten students to take home each evening for addition reading instruction.  Lessons  are geared to in class instruction and change each week. They are designed so children are able to do nightly lessons independently. Students are encouraged to share with their parents and siblings.  These lessons  contain songs, reading prompts, and poems that help them practice phonemic awareness and alphabetic principal in addition to specific phonics skill acquisition lessons. Reading Buddy lessons are referenced to daily classroom reading lessons  Student participation is determined through regular evaluation of reading skills using DIBELS and our school district reading screener.  Students are  loaned their own iShuffle containing the recorded playlist along with a packet of reading scripts to take home each day as their “Reading Buddy”.   They love this unique new way to do homework and learn more about reading and literature. They are more engaged, they practice longer and they are making great progress in becoming successful readers.
